TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

"Uplift

&

Inspire"

The best teaching is always
a mix of passion and expertise.

Our young adults are the future of our world, and it is our responsibility to protect them and help them reach their greatest potential. It is essential that we provide our youth with a safe environment, so that they can grow emotionally, intellectually, physically and socially. It is my belief that the classroom should be an environment that promotes learning, sharing and experimentation in creative and stimulating ways.

It is essential that my students be actively involved in learning. I encourage them to seek answers, rather than simply be recipients of information. As a teacher, it is my role to encourage them and involve them in every aspect of learning. It is my responsibility to give them not only instruction, but hands-on activities and adequate time to explore. I  encourage them to work together and help one another.

As a mentor and a guide, I strive to create an environment that excites and energizes my students, so that learning becomes a joy rather than a chore. The classroom should inspire learning in creative and interesting ways through the use of topic-related visuals and inspiring artwork samples. I strive to find ways to tie in the students’ personal interests to the materials they are learning about. Students have input on the topics being studied, as well as the in-class activities and project work.  I use multi-media materials, whenever it is applicable or available, to enhance the learning experience.

Equally important, to learning the curriculum, is protecting and building the students’ self-esteem.  In my classroom, everyone is respected and in turn is required to show respect for each another. No student should ever feel belittled, humiliated or put down. Instead, my students are praised and encouraged to reach their highest potential. This attitude creates a secure classroom environment, where every student is equally valued.  A safe and structured atmosphere promotes educational, personal and social growth.

As an educator, it is my sincere desire to inspire and encourage my students so that they may discover the passion for learning that I myself have. Everyone is encouraged to reach their individual potential – whatever that may be. Education is a combination of intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth, and each student deserves to be mentored in all of these areas. It is also my mission to educate my students in an exciting way, and also treat them with respect and empathy, and encourage them to reach their own personal best.

PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS

DUAL CREDIT

I am one of the original teachers in the Dual Credit Program that was started several years ago. The Dual Credit program allows high school students to gain a high school credit while attending and experiencing college classes. Should students continue with the college program, they will have already gained a credit (or two) in the program, which is extremely beneficial. Many students that participate in the program are "at risk" students and experiencing the college atmosphere often sparks an interest in continuing their studies beyond high school. it is an incredibly inspiring program that I am very pleased to be involved with.

INTERACTIVE TEXTBOOK

As a TLA project, I created an online interactive textbook of Photoshop class lessons. Creating the book required that I learn new e-book creation software and gain an understanding of how to publish to an iPad. This knowledge was then incorporated into my classes and lessons and gave my the opportunity to teach Interactive Design. this was a very rewarding experience for me that translated into many new opportunities.

ONLINE CLASS CREATION

As an assigned project, I was asked to develop an online version of one of my classes: Design Technology in the  Corporate Communications program. Converting a class that was traditionally taught in a classroom to an online learning environment presented certain challenges. Drawing on my skills and knowledge in interactive documents and video production, along with a good deal of research, I was able to convert the class into a series of videos and interactive PDFs that suited the online learning environment.

FUTURE GOALS:

To develop new programs and courses of study:
Design Skills for Non-Designers
Marketing for Artists, Creators and Makers

SCHOLARSHIP
RESEARCH
CREATIVE ACTIVITIES

AREAS OF INTEREST

DESIGN FOR NON DESIGNERS

As a Graphic Designer, I am experienced in teaching design skills and the associated software programs to non-designers and students that are pursuing other career paths (but often related to the graphics industry). I feel that learning these basic skills further enhances these other areas of study and enriches the students' skills. I would welcome the opportunity to further explore this area and share my findings through workshops and lectures.

POST GRAD CERTIFICATE IN GRAPHIC DESIGN

Sheridan previously offered a very comprehensive Bachelor of Design degree that was suitable to students with a high level of interest and skill, but the program was also highly competitive and therefore was difficult to gain admission. I feel that the college and students alike would benefit by offering a post-grad certificate in Graphic Design that would allow students in other programs to further learn about design and develop basic skills that would further enhance their areas of expertise. This is a program that I would be very much interested in developing.

BRANDING AND MARKETING FOR CREATIVE PROFESSIONALS

As a professor, designer and marketing specialist, I have a special and specific interest in Marketing for Artists and Creators. In the Crafts & Design Program, I was asked to create a course which I now teach and pour my heart into. Branding and marketing for artists and makers requires a different and unique approach, specific to their area of expertise. This is an area that I would love to research more thoroughly, as I feel there is a need for this in our FAAD programs.

COLLEAGUE
TESTIMONIAL

A classroom visit and reflection.

Eva is a knowledgeable, talented, caring individual who loves what she does. She is friendly and approachable and students find it easy to come to her with questions or problems they may be experiencing. Eva has a lot of industry experience that she brings into the classroom and shares that knowledge with the students.

Through the years she has been able to stay on top of industry trends and embrace new technologies to keep her classes relevant and current. Her knowledge and skills in the industry cover a range of disciplines allowing her to work across different programs but the thing that is consistent is that she is always there for her students, current and former. When students want to ask for advice or run something by her or get advice on a portfolio Eva always has time for them. She has the respect of her students and many of them stay in touch long after they graduate.  Her friendly caring manner is great for the young shy students in Media Fundamentals who may feel overwhelmed in their first year of college. She makes them feel that they are important and someone here cares about them and their success. Her teaching style re-enforces that care by presenting the material in a clear, easy to follow manner with plenty of demonstration and practice activities.
